Young Mariners

The Greenwich Young Mariners Foundation held their 3rd Annual Sail-A-Thon at Greenwich Point on Saturday, June 15. Eight children in this year’s Young Mariners Program went out for an afternoon’s sail  with volunteers from the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich and the Greenwich Sail & Power Squadron on board Russ Kennedy’s Mistral, Mitchell Goldberg’s Secret and Bob Kleid’s Suite Luxury.  Meanwhile Greenwich residents were able to enjoy free hot dogs and sodas and a prize drawing after their own activities on the water at Greenwich Community Sailing that generously donated half the day’s proceeds to the Young Mariners Foundation. Tom O’Connell, Greenwich Young Mariners Founder, declared the afternoon a great success with over $1,400 raised to support the kids learning to sail this summer.

‘J Class Yachts ~ their History from the 30’s til Today’

The J Class has its roots in the oldest sporting race in the world, The America’s Cup. This international event was born from an annual race around the Isle of Wight in Great Britain, hosted by the Royal Yacht Squadron, that was originally called the ‘100 Guinea Cup’.

Our expert speaker Rick Delfosse of Norwalk Cove and Rex Marine will cover the history of these incredible 130 foot yachts with photos from his personal files and movie clips of old.
